Budget Commentary
2006 Budget Commentary
In 2005, the Newark Police Department experienced:
· A 5.2% decrease in calls for service.
· Part I crimes decreased by 7.0% and Part II crimes decreased by 1.2%.
· Miscellaneous calls for service decreased by 1.6%.
· There was a 24.7% increase in the amount of stolen property.
· Adult criminal arrests decreased by 11.8%.
· Juvenile criminal arrests remained virtually the same.
· A 17.2% increase of Part I crimes against persons.
· A 13.8% decrease of Part I crimes against property.
· Rapes, Aggravated Assaults, and Auto Thefts increased.
· Robberies, Burglaries, Thefts, and Arsons decreased.
· The number of Homicides remained the same.
· Public order crimes increased by 2.4% in 2005.
· Noise and Misdemeanor Assault incidents increased
· Alcohol and Disorderly incidents decreased.
· Traffic complaints decreased by 5.5%.
· Parking meter summons decreased by 7.3%.
· Other parking summons increased by 1.9 %.
· DUI arrests increased by 16.0%
· Other motor vehicle arrests decreased by 3.1%.
· Warnings for traffic violations decreased by 41.0%.
· Fatal accidents remained the same.
· Total number of accidents decreased by 8.4%.
Arrests
The Police Department continues to concentrate on order maintenance, with arrests in those areas accounting for 48.3% of all arrests. This is an increase of 6.6 percentage points from 2004.
