The Newark Police regrets to announce the passing of Chief William F. Nefosky, Jr. on Tuesday, January 16, 2007 at his parent’s home. He was surrounded by his loving family after a brave battle with cancer. He was 52. William was born on December 30, 1954, in Kingston, Pennsylvania, the son of William F. Nefosky, Sr. and Rita (Swinski) Nefosky.

A 1972 graduate of Christiana High School, Chief Nefosky attended Delaware Technical Community College in Stanton and graduated with a B.S. in Criminal Justice from Wilmington College in 1978, where he continued his education in graduate school. Chief Nefosky was also a graduate of the FBI National Academy in 1991.

After serving as a seasonal police officer with the Rehoboth Beach police Department and as an officer with the Smyrna Police Department, Chief Nefoskyserved with the Newark Police Department for 28 years, rising to the rank of Chief. He was a two-time recipient of the Nowinski Medal for Meritorious Service (the department’s highest honor for meritorious service), as well as a Lifetime Achievement Award from Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) for his many years of exemplary work in combating drunk driving.  

Chief Nefosky was a member of the First Baptist Church of New Castle, coached girl’s softball in the Canal League and was a long-time Harley-Davidson motorcycle enthusiast. 

In addition to his parents, he is survived by 3 daughters, Katherine Marsh and her husband James, Annie Lynn Nefosky and Stephanie Nefosky, all of Bear, a brother, Benjamin L. Nefosky and his wife Cynthia of Bear, a sister Diane Nefosky of Newark and 2 grandchildren, William and Abigail Marsh, a niece, Erin E. Nefosky, and nephew, Benjamin E. Nefosky. He also leaves behind his loving companion, Terri Streett of Newark, and loving family friend, Christine Horne of Newark.

Chief Nefosky’s funeral service was celebrated at the First Baptist Church of New Castle by  Rev. Ron Sears, Senior Pastor, on Saturday January 20, 2007. Interment with full honors followed at All Saints Cemetery, Wilmington, DE 19808. R.T. Foard & Jones Funeral Home of Newark, De hosted the viewing and handled the funeral arrangements.
