City Election Information - Updated March 14, 2014
Polling Locations
The city election is to be held on Tuesday, April 8, 2014.  Polls open at 7:00 a.m. and close at 8:00 p.m.  The specific polling places are as follows:
  • District 2 – Aetna Fire Station #8, 410 Ogletown Road
  • District 5 – First Presbyterian Church, Memorial Hall, 292 W. Main Street
  • District 6 – First Church of the Nazarene, 357 Paper Mill Road

Identification will be required of all voters.  For absentee ballots, please contact the City Secretary's Office at (302) 366-7070.

Filed Candidates for the 2014 Special Election for District 2 (partial term to expire April 2015):
  • Sharon Hughes
  • Todd Ruckle
  • C. Haig Stubblebine
  • The deadline to file for District 2 is Monday, March 10, 2014.

Filed Candidate for the 2014 Election for District 3 (two year term) as of Filing Deadline:
  • Robert Gifford (Mr. Gifford will be declared the winner since he is unopposed and will be sworn into office on Tuesday, April 15, 2014.)

Filed Candidates for the 2014 Election for District 5 (two year term) as of Filing Deadline:
  • Luke Chapman
  • Shirley W.B. Wilson

Filed Candidates for the 2014 Election for District 6 (two year term) as of Filing Deadline:
  • A. Stuart Markham, Jr.

Voter Registration
*** To vote in the April 8, 2014 election, you must be registered by Monday, March 17, 2014. ***

Requirements to Vote
  • You must be at least 18 years old by Election Day.
  • You must be a U.S. citizen.
  • You must have established residency in the city for at least 24 days prior to the election.

Any individual who is registered to vote with the State of Delaware at a residence within the corporate limits of the City of Newark is eligible to vote. If you are unsure if you are registered, please call the City Secretary’s office at (302) 366-7070 and a staff member can look up your registration.

Request an Absentee Ballot
You can request to have an absentee ballot be sent to your home. To request an absentee ballot for city elections, fill out this form and send to the City Secretary's Office at:

You may stop by the office between 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, where you may vote in person and have your ballot notarized.

Absentee ballot affidavits may be submitted at any time preceding the election. However, final absentee ballots will not be mailed out until candidate filing deadlines for the election have passed. Absentee ballots are now available for Districts 5 and 6. Absentee ballots for District 2 will be available after the March 10, 2014 filing deadline. All absentee ballots must be returned to the City Secretary’s Office no later than 5:00 p.m. the day of the election.
