Fire Marshal

Fire Prevention and Safety

The City of Newark is one of only four jurisdictions in the State of Delaware that has its own Fire Marshal.  Together with our Fire Prevention Inspector they enforce all the NFPA, International Fire, and Delaware State Fire Prevention Codes.  They also review all plans for installation of fire alarms and suppression systems, and make inspections for compliance.

This unit also issues permits and makes inspections of tents used for temporary events, fireworks, and pyrotechnic displays. It also issues operational licenses to those businesses in the fire protection industry as well as those susceptible to a particular fire hazard due to the nature of their business operations.

Together with our property maintenance unit, they conduct yearly safety inspections of all fraternity and sorority houses.  The  Fire Marshal also responds to and investigates all fires deemed “suspicious” or those resulting in injury or death, and prosecutes those suspected to be arson.

For more information, call the Fire Marshal at (302) 366-7077.
