Founded by former Mayor Vance Funk, and now co-chaired by both Mr. Funk and Mayor Polly Sierer, Taste of Newark is the ultimate foodie event in Newark! Guests enjoy the culinary delights of nearly 50 Newark restaurants accompanied by the finest area wine distributors on the picturesque Old College Lawn. Celebrity cooking demonstrations provide phenomenal entertainment as guests' palates are tempted by the ultimate variety of foods from around the world. A spirit of competition between each and every restaurant brings the absolute best eating experience to guests. 
Fueling the competition among eateries is the annual "Iron Chef" style Battle of the Chefs! Now in its sixth year, Newark's best chefs battle for the title of Newark's Top Chef, with one hour to concoct masterpieces from a secret list of ingredients. Competing this year are Donny Merrill of Skipjack, Matt McKay from the Newark Country Club, and Ben MacGuiness and Robbie Jester from 16 Mile Taphouse, to be judged by a panel of local celebrity judges.

Special guest Executive Chef Tom Hannum of Buckley's Tavern in Centerville, Delaware will judge the Taste of Newark’s “Battle of the Chefs,” which pits four well-known Newark chefs against each other challenging them to develop tasty masterpieces from a secret list of ingredients.

Chef Hannum started at the Hotel du Pont in September of 1978 as a cook’s helper after graduating from the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, NY. He has also trained at the 5-Star Restaurant Le Bec Fin with renowned Chef Georges Perrier, as well as at the Ente Vom Lehel with Chef Hans Peter Wodarz in the Hotel Nassauer Hof in Wiesbaden, Germany. Gained extensive culinary and leadership experience in various positions at the Hotel du Pont and promoted to Executive Chef in 2002. Tom has been a guest chef at the prestigious James Beard House in New York City, which led to an invitation to prepare a 3-course menu for the popular “Chef on a Shoestring” live segment of the CBS Saturday Early Show. He also had the honor of cooking with legendary Julia Child while featured on Good Morning America on ABC. In 2011 Tom was inducted into the American Culinary Federation's honor society, the American Academy of Chefs, in recognition of his culinary and leadership achievements over his career. Later promoted to Director of Food and Beverage before retiring in 2011 to become Chef/Owner of the newly renovated Buckley's Tavern in Centerville, DE.
